Heather Richards
The Story Behind The Songbird

Heather Richards is an American singer-songwriter from the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, known for blending bluegrass, traditional country, and Americana influences. She performs throughout the Northeast and continues releasing original music rooted in storytelling and heart.

Growing up in the Adirondack Hills, Heather Richards was surrounded by music from an early age. Her parents frequently performed at local VFW halls, bluegrass festivals, and regional venues, and by the age of ten she was joining them on stage to sing for audiences. Encouraged by her family and inspired by the vibrant local music scene, Richards quickly developed a passion for performing. By eighteen she was performing regularly with her own band, singing songs by artists such as Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt, Anne Murray, Patty Loveless, and Hank Williams. Long before traditional country experienced its modern revival, Richards was proudly carrying the torch of classic country music — she was country when country wasn’t cool.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Female Vocalist of the Year (2003) — Northeast Country Music Association

2× Capital Region Eddies Award Nominee (2024, 2026) — Country/Bluegrass Artist of the Year

Richards’ musical influences span the golden era of country and bluegrass, including artists such as Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Sr., Bill Monroe, Buck Owens, The Carter Family, Emmylou Harris, Flatt & Scruggs, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, John Denver, Jim Reeves, Gram Parsons, Kathy Mattea, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Along with these legendary artists, she credits many local Adirondack musicians and bluegrass festival performers as important influences on her musical style.

Early in her career, Richards traveled to Nashville to record original material after being invited by songwriters associated with Patty Loveless and Dobie Gray, best known for the hit song “Drift Away.” During this time she recorded her first vinyl 45 featuring her original song “Apple Tree” along with “It’s Not Like Me,” written by Bud Reneau and Dobie Gray. Her recordings also included the song “Sweet Romance,” and these early releases reached the Billboard and Hot Independent charts, with “Apple Tree” reaching number 23.

As her career continued to grow, Richards made an important personal decision to step back from the spotlight for a time in order to focus on raising her son. She considers this to be the greatest achievement of her life. While it meant taking time away from performing and turning down opportunities along the way, it was a choice she would never trade for anything. “I became a better human and writer because of my son”. That time shaped her perspective and deepened her connection to the stories and experiences that influence her music today.

Throughout her career Heather Richards has performed thousands of shows across the Northeast, sharing her love of traditional country, bluegrass, and Americana music. She frequently performs at venues and events throughout the Adirondack region, sometimes collaborating with other local musicians who share her passion for roots music.

Her talent and dedication have earned recognition within the regional music community. In 2003 she was named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Northeast Country Music Association, and she has continued to receive recognition for her work, including nominations for the Capital Region Eddy Awards for Country/Bluegrass Artist in 2024 and 2026.

Now entering a new chapter, Heather Richards is once again focusing fully on her music. Guided by life experiences and a deep connection to nature in the Adirondack Mountains, her sound and songwriting continue to evolve, intertwining traditional country with bluegrass and Americana influences. As the Adirondack Songbird, Heather Richards remains dedicated to sharing authentic roots music with audiences throughout the Northeast and beyond.
